Last Saturday we held an All About Steel Training for builders who wanted to master the art of working with structural steel.

The main purpose of the All About Steel Training is to cover theory and good practices for builders who work with structural steel on their projects. Our event covered:

As an addition, this Saturday we had a Q & A session with a special guest – structural engineer Jakub Nowikowski from Pole Structural Engineers.

Event attendees had a chance to see the semi-automated production line, 3D printing robot and volunteers tried their skills in our welding bays.

Takeaway from All About Steel Training For Builders:

Fitting structural steel on-site is a critical process that demands precision, teamwork, and adherence to safety standards. Here are practical tips to ensure efficient and safe installation for builders:

1. Plan Thoroughly Before Installation

  • Review Blueprints: Ensure all team members are familiar with the structural drawings and steel placement plans.
  • Pre-Check Materials: Verify that all steel components are delivered according to specifications and are free from defects.
  • Coordinate Logistics: Arrange for proper lifting equipment and ensure the site is prepared for the delivery and handling of steel beams.

2. Ensure Safety is a Priority

  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Hard hats, steel-toe boots, gloves, and high-visibility clothing are non-negotiable.
  • Secure the Site: Mark off the working area, restrict access to non-essential personnel, and use proper signage.
  • Inspect Equipment: Check lifting tools, cranes, and hoists for safety and reliability before starting work.

3. Use Precise Lifting and Positioning Techniques

  • Select the Right Equipment: Choose cranes, slings, or chain blocks appropriate for the weight and size of the steel being installed.
  • Balance the Load: Always check the balance and stability of the load to prevent swaying or tipping during lifting.
  • Work as a Team: Communicate effectively with your crew to guide steel beams into position safely and accurately.

4. Focus on Accurate Alignment

  • Use Laser Levels: Ensure precision in aligning steel beams with the foundation or existing structures.
  • Temporary Bracing: Use temporary supports or braces to stabilise steel components while securing connections.
  • Check Plumb and Level: Continuously verify that beams are plumb (vertical) and level during the installation process.

5. Perfect Connection Practices

  • Bolting: Hand-tighten bolts initially, ensuring proper alignment, before using torque wrenches to secure them.
  • Welding: If welding is required, ensure welders are certified, and all joints are completed according to structural specifications.
  • Inspect Connections: Double-check all connections for tightness and stability before removing temporary bracing.

6. Manage Weather Conditions

  • Plan Around Weather: Avoid fitting steel in high winds, heavy rain, or icy conditions to minimise risks.
  • Prevent Slips: Ensure scaffolding, platforms, and ladders are clean and dry for safe access to elevated areas.

7. Maintain Clear Communication

  • Use Hand Signals: For crane operations and lifting, ensure all workers understand and use standard hand signals.
  • Hold Toolbox Talks: Regularly brief the team on safety, progress, and potential challenges during the day’s work.

8. Handle Rust and Coating Issues

  • Inspect Coatings: Check for scratches or damage to anti-corrosion coatings and touch them up on-site if necessary.
  • Apply Protection: Ensure exposed steel surfaces are treated with appropriate primers or paints if left unfinished.

9. Stay Updated with Building Codes

  • Follow Regulations: Ensure all steel fitting adheres to local and national building codes and safety standards.
  • Document Compliance: Keep records of inspections, welding certifications, and installation approvals for future reference.

10. Partner with Trusted Suppliers

  • Choose Reliable Sources: Work with trusted suppliers like Steelo.co.uk to ensure high-quality steel components that fit perfectly on-site.
  • Consult Experts: Don’t hesitate to seek advice on tricky installations or customised steel solutions.
