3D Printing of Steel – Our 3D printing project team is getting bigger! Zeina, a PhD candidate from Warwick University started helping us with this exciting project.

3D Printing of Steel – Watch our vlog video and learn more about Zeina and what will be her input towards the 3D printing project.

Being part of Steelo LTD is all about innovation and genuine interest in experimenting with new ideas! In 2018, we have set up an R&D project of 3D printing of structural steel. Since then, we have been testing the viability of printing structural steel elements and connection. Lina Alexaki, our design engineer and project coordinator, has recently attended a training course at Cranfield University to learn more about WAAM technology. Watch our video to learn more about the outcomes of that training.

Since the project’s inception, we have been rigorously testing the feasibility of printing structural steel elements and connections, exploring how this innovative approach can streamline processes, reduce waste, and enhance customisation in steel manufacturing. By embracing cutting-edge methods, we aim to redefine traditional practices and bring a fresh perspective to the world of structural engineering.

The Vision Behind the Project

The concept of 3D printing structural steel is revolutionary. Traditional steel manufacturing involves cutting, welding, and assembling parts, which can lead to material wastage and limitations in customisation. By integrating Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technology, we aim to produce highly precise, customised steel components directly from digital designs. This process not only reduces material waste but also shortens production timelines and opens doors to previously impossible designs.

Our goal is to create structural steel elements and connections that meet or exceed industry standards for strength, durability, and performance while leveraging the advantages of additive manufacturing. This shift in methodology promises to benefit industries ranging from construction and infrastructure to aerospace and automotive.
